Atlanta Boating and Watercraft Accidents Attorney
Injured on the water
With dozens of years of collective legal experience, Kaine Law has represented a number of clients who have sustained life-altering injuries from recreational water activities. With easy access to beautiful beaches and lakes in Georgia, there are countless opportunities for boating, skiing, jet skiing and kayaking. Unfortunately, that also opens the door for injuries and accidents as a result of negligence.
At Kaine Law we believe in a personalized commitment to our clients and proudly represent those who have suffered injuries from recreational water activities.
The open water can be a time for families and friends to enjoy one another and relax. However, with the increasing number of accidents, it is important to understand the cause. For those accidents identified, roughly 75% of victims drowned in a boating accident. Of those drowning victims, approximately 85% of the victims were not wearing a life jacket. A major cause of boating accidents is an inexperienced boating operator. More than two-thirds of the watercraft operators involved in these boating accidents had not received any boating safety instructions or participated in a boater’s safety course. The top 5 contributing factors to boating accidents and personal watercraft fatalities are:
- Driver distraction
- Operator inexperience
- Improper lookout
- Mechanical failure
- Excessive speed
Personal watercraft accidents are on the rise
Fatalities from boat, canoe, kayak and personal watercraft accidents are on the rise. Statistics recently released by the United States Coast Guard revealed an increase in boating accidents from 4,064 to 4,158 in one year’s time. A fatality rate of 5.3 deaths per 100,000 registered watercraft showed a 1.9% increase from the previous year. Tragically, this included 22 children under the age of 13 who were killed while boating and 12 children who died from drowning. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources provides updated statistics about Georgia boating accidents and other watercraft incidents on their website.
